Forsythia blooms – Game time for weed-killers!

The forsythias are in bloom in our Tipp City Community Garden! Not only do forsythia blooms look great, they’re a wonderful timer for gardeners who want to get a leg up on weeds. Forsythia blooms are a well-known indicator of each climate’s readiness for weed control.

Forsythia tend to bloom right when those yard-based weeds begin to germinate: namely, crabgrass. You’ll want to apply a pre-emergent weed control to stop crabgrass and other grassy weeds from emerging – killing them right from the start. We recommend our Wow! Pre-emergent Weed Control. It works on everything: crabgrass, creeping bentgrass, smartweed, dandelions, redroot pigweed, purslane, lambsquarter, foxtail, barnyard grass and Bermuda grass. Plus, Wow! is an all-natural product and you won’t need to worry about keeping kids and pets off the lawn directly after application. In addition, it provides a nice boost of nitrogen to the grass you want to keep.

Another thing you might want to try – corn gluten meal. It’s a natural herbicide, and, again, won’t harm your grass. With a little planning, you  can make sure to beat the weeds before they get growing! Happy weeding!
